The names in the visitor's books have been transcribed by Step Short volunteers who have donated tens of thousands of unpaid hours to the task of analysing 42,000 signatures, mostly in pencil. The work has been painstaking and, in some cases, almost impossible, but Step Short has done its best to create an accurate list of the names of those who signed the books nearly 100 years ago. There will, though, be errors; anyone who has tried to read a doctor’s prescription will know how difficult it can be to interpret a signature!
If you do spot something that you believe is wrong, please help us by getting in touch and telling us which name you think is wrong – and, more importantly, what it should be. Together we can help to make this a vital tool that will support research into the lives of those who fought in the first world war.
